Descripción The purpose of this research is to analyze the distribution of primary schools in Panama according to their location in urban and rural areas, as well as to identify the proportion of educational centers that do or do not have adequate pedestrian infrastructure, specifically sidewalks in their immediate surroundings. Through this analysis, the study aims to highlight the current state of road safety faced by students on their journeys to and from school. The research is conducted through the application of the Star Rating for Schools methodology, which allows for a standardized assessment of road risk levels in school zones by considering factors related to infrastructure, traffic conditions, and pedestrian safety. The results will make it possible to identify existing gaps between urban and rural contexts and will serve as a technical input for the development of strategies aimed at improving road safety conditions in primary schools across the country.
Descripción El propósito de esta investigación es analizar la distribución de las escuelas primarias en Panamá según su localización en áreas urbanas y rurales, así como identificar el porcentaje de centros educativos que cuentan o no con infraestructura peatonal adecuada, específicamente aceras, señalización y reductor de velocidad en su entorno inmediato. A través de este análisis se busca evidenciar el estado actual de la seguridad vial que enfrentan los estudiantes en su trayecto hacia y desde la escuela. El estudio se desarrolla mediante la aplicación de la metodología Star Rating for Schools, la cual permite evaluar de forma estandarizada los niveles de riesgo vial en zonas escolares, considerando factores relacionados con la infraestructura, el tránsito y la seguridad de los peatones. Los resultados obtenidos permitirán visibilizar brechas existentes entre contextos urbanos y rurales, y servirán como insumo técnico para la formulación de estrategias orientadas a mejorar las condiciones de seguridad vial en las escuelas primarias del país.
