Descripción The document was prepared for the presentation of the book in a virtual activity organized by the University of Panama. The review is a first approach to the text and tries to synthesize central aspects in which Roberto Ayala places the individual-society discussion within the framework of Sociology, based on Marxism, but incorporating the best contributions of other theories. With the aim of refuting the possibilism and fatalistic determinism present in the Social Sciences, in the context of the capitalist society that constrains individuality, freedom and emancipation in a way that contradicts the advancement of the historical-social conditions created by the human being. Therefore, emphasis was placed on two themes developed at length in the book: individuality and freedom. These themes were developed from the author's criticism of methodological individualism, especially in its instrumental version of the theory of rational choice. Thus, the central argument, to confront the idea of ??the indeterminate and dehistoricized individual or holistic determinisms, revolves around the individual as a social being. This means that individuality arises in society, but without the individual there is no society. Likewise, freedom is a social condition, and a concept achieved within the framework of social evolution. Therefore, it opposes the understanding of subjective intentionality separated from the different social planes in which individuals interact and postulates the difference between individual freedom and institutionalized individuality.
Descripción El documento fue preparado para la presentación del libro en una actividad virtual organizada por la Universidad de Panamá. La reseña es un primer acercamiento al texto, y trata de sintetizar aspectos centrales en los que Roberto Ayala coloca la discusión individuo -sociedad en el marco de la Sociología, fundamentado en el marxismo, pero incorporando los mejores aportes de otras teorías. Con el objetivo de refutar al posibilismo y el determinismo fatalista presentes en las Ciencias Sociales, en el contexto de la sociedad capitalista que constriñe la individualidad, la libertad y la emancipación de manera contradictoria con el avance de las condiciones histórico-sociales creadas por el ser humano. Por lo tanto, se hizo énfasis en dos temáticas desarrolladas con amplitud en el libro: individualidad y libertad. Dichos temas fueron elaborados a partir de la crítica del autor al individualismo metodológico, sobre todo en su versión instrumental de la teoría de la elección racional. De manera que el eje nodal argumentativo, para confrontar la idea del individuo indeterminado y deshistorizado o los determinismos holistas, gira en torno al individuo como ser social. Lo cual significa que la individualidad surge en sociedad, pero sin individuo no hay sociedad. Igualmente, la libertad es una condición social y un concepto alcanzado en el marco de la evolución social. Por ello, se opone a la comprensión de la intencionalidad subjetiva separada de los diferentes planos sociales en los que interactúan los individuos y postula la diferencia entre la libertad individual y la individualidad institucionalizada.
