Descripción The main objective of this research was to identify the factors influencing empathy levels among Peruvian dental students in the post-COVID-19 pandemic context. This observational, cross-sectional, and analytical study was conducted at two higher education institutions: Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (public) and Universidad Norbert Wiener (private). The sample consisted of 332 students selected through stratified random sampling, who were administered the Health Professional version of the Jefferson Empathy Scale to assess their levels of empathy. The findings showed that 65.1% of participants demonstrated a regular level of empathy, while 18.4% achieved a good level. Regression analysis revealed that the type of university was the only sociodemographic factor with a statistically significant association: students from the private university were more likely to exhibit higher levels of empathy compared to those from the public institution. Other variables such as age, sex, marital status, academic year, place of origin, and religion showed no significant influence. The study concludes that institutional context and curricular emphasis are critical to fostering empathy in dental education. These findings support the integration of pedagogical strategies aimed at strengthening humanistic competencies to improve the quality of patient-centered care.
