Descripción Aquaculture represents important challenges regarding water use and discharge of polluting effluents. This requires the application of technologies that reduce water use, mitigate environmental impacts and increase production while respecting animal welfare. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of biofloc technology on nutrient recycling, animal welfare and sustainability in a Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) culture. Two treatments were used in triplicate: TBF= biofloc technology and C= traditional system. The TBF treatment was prepared for 14 days prior to stocking the fish. 60 fish per treatment (20 per replicate) were used with an initial weight of 21.68±2.42 grams and a total length of 10.52±1.08 centimeters. The TBF treatment showed higher values ??of total dissolved solids, electrical conductivity, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate (P>0.05). No differences were observed between treatments in the variables of behavior, stress and health (P>0.05). Fish in the TBF showed greater weight gain (P<0.05). The TBF treatment decreased water consumption and wastewater discharge (P<0.05). The TBF treatment resulted in a sustainable alternative by reducing water consumption and effluent discharge through nutrient recycling, increasing productive performance without affecting animal welfare.
