Descripción This article analyzes the main characteristics of the teaching workforce in Panama using data from the 2023 National Population Census, addressing three critical dimensions: sociodemographic and family characteristics, salary distribution and economic inequalities, and territorial distribution in relation to the student–teacher ratio. The findings reveal a high feminization of the teaching profession, a marked aging of the workforce, and deep inequalities both salary-based and territorial that particularly affect women and Indigenous populations. Based on these results, key implications are discussed for equity, efficiency, and the sustainability of the Panamanian education system. The article also proposes ideas for evaluating future public policies aimed at strengthening educational governance, implementing a transparent and continuous information system on teaching staff, advancing a national gender-oriented equal pay policy, and developing comprehensive strategies to attract, retain, and equitably distribute educators across the country.
