Descripción Traffic congestion is a significant problem in urban areas, and Panama is no exception. This phenomenon not only affects the mobility and time of citizens but can also have repercussions on their mental health. Previous studies have shown that prolonged exposure to traffic can develop high levels of stress. However, despite the relevance of this problem, no research has been found that specifically addresses the relationship between traffic congestion and the predisposition to suffer from depression in university students. For this reason, the objective of this study is to evaluate the existence of a relationship between vehicular traffic congestion and the predisposition to suffer depressive symptoms in university students. The study was carried out during the first semester of 2024 at the Technological University of Panama. To find out if there was a link between depression and traffic, a survey was applied to a representative sample of students from the faculties with the largest student population, in this sample different aspects were analyzed such as their demographic data, mental health history, their responses to DSM -5 indicators and their perception of traffic. Based on the results found, it was concluded that there is a possible relationship between traffic congestion and the predisposition to suffer depressive symptoms, highlighting that this is greatly influenced by the noise caused by traffic and the amount of time lost in traffic.
Descripción La congestión del tráfico es un problema significativo en las áreas urbanas, y Panamá no es la excepción. Este fenómeno no solo afecta la movilidad y el tiempo de los ciudadanos, sino que también puede tener repercusiones en su salud mental. Estudios previos han demostrado que la exposición prolongada al tráfico puede desarrollar altos niveles estrés. Sin embargo, a pesar de la relevancia de este problema, no se han encontrado investigaciones que aborden específicamente la relación entre la congestión del tráfico y la predisposición a padecer depresión estudiantes universitarios. Por esta razón, el objetivo de este estudio es evaluar la existencia de una relación entre la congestión del tráfico vehicular y la predisposición a padecer síntomas depresivos en los estudiantes universitarios. El estudio fue realizado durante el primer semestre 2024 de la Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá. Para conocer si existía un vínculo entre la depresión y el tráfico se le aplicó una encuesta a una muestra representativa de las facultades con mayor población estudiantil. En dicha muestra se analizaron distintos aspectos como sus datos demográficos, antecedentes de salud mental, sus respuestas a indicadores del Manual Diagnóstico y Estadístico de los Trastornos Mentales (DSM-5) y su percepción del tráfico. Por los resultados encontrados, se concluyó que, existe una posible relación entre la congestión del tráfico y la predisposición a padecer síntomas depresivos, destacando que para esto influye bastante el ruido ocasionado por el tráfico y la cantidad de tiempo perdido dentro del tráfico.
