Descripción The aim of this report is to document a recent record of Butorides striata in western Panama and highlight its relevance for updating knowledge on the regional distribution of the species. The striated heron (Butorides striata), also known as mangrove heron or little green heron, is a small member of the family Ardeidae associated with freshwater and brackish aquatic habitats in the Neotropics, with a wide distribution in the Americas but considered rare and scarcely recorded in western Panama. During an ornithological survey in the Azuero Peninsula, a single individual was observed on the shore of an artificial shallow water body, surrounded by shrubs, trees and grasslands. The bird was actively stalking prey along the water’s edge and, after detecting the observers, retreated under the riparian vegetation, consistent with its cryptic and solitary behavior. The individual was photographed, representing the first confirmed photographic record for the Azuero Peninsula and the second published record for western Panama since Wetmore’s classic report more than 50 years ago, underscoring the value of local monitoring to detect poorly documented species.
Descripción El objetivo de esta nota corta es documentar un registro fotográfico reciente de Butorides striata en el occidente de Panamá y destacar su importancia para el conocimiento de la distribución regional de la especie. La garza listada es una pequeña garza de la familia Ardeidae, asociada a hábitats acuáticos dulces y salobres en el Neotrópico, con amplia distribución en América, pero considerada rara y poco reportada en el oeste de Panamá. Durante un monitoreo ornitológico en la Península de Azuero se observó un individuo en la orilla de un cuerpo de agua superficial artificial, rodeado de arbustos, árboles y pastizales. El ave acechaba activamente potenciales presas en el borde del agua y al detectar la presencia de los observadores, se refugió bajo la vegetación ribereña, en concordancia con su comportamiento críptico y solitario descrito en la literatura. El ejemplar fue fotografiado, constituyendo el primer registro fotográfico confirmado de B. striata para la Península de Azuero y el segundo registro publicado para el occidente de Panamá desde la referencia clásica de Wetmore, lo que actualiza y refina el conocimiento sobre su distribución regional.
