Descripción The jaguar is the largest felid in the American continent and is threatened in Panama. Since 1998, we have conducted scientific research to obtain information about the ecology of the jaguar in the Darien National Park and in mixed areas where there are cattle pastures and forest remnants. Based on the information compiled, we learned that 395 jaguars have been killed between 1989 to 2023 in Panama, and Darién is the province where more animals killed were reported. We use camera traps and GPS collars to obtain information about the jaguars, and the information obtained basically is translated for decision making at the level of communities and decision makers. Further, this information is disseminated, good sustainable practices are promoted, and mitigation measures are implemented to promoting the coexistence between the people and jaguars.
Descripción El jaguar es el felino más grande del continente americano y está en peligro de desaparecer en Panamá. Desde 1998 realizamos investigación científica para obtener información sobre la ecología del jaguar en el Parque Nacional Darién y en zonas mixtas donde hay potreros y remanentes de bosques. Con base en la información recopilada sabemos que 395 jaguares han sido asesinados entre 1989 al 2023 y Darién es la provincia donde se reportan más muertes. Utilizamos cámaras trampas y collares GPS para obtener la información de los jaguares, estos datos son básicamente traducidos en recomendaciones muy puntuales para las comunidades y los tomadores de decisiones. Además, se disemina la información, se promueve la realización de buenas prácticas sostenibles y medidas de mitigación que puedan ayudar a las personas a mejorar la convivencia con los jaguares.
