Descripción By 2023, Colombia reports that 1.36% of exported coffee is roasted, reflecting significant barriers in the transformation of green coffee to roasted coffee. SMEs in the rural sector face low technology adoption due to technical and financial constraints. This research aims to identify the factors of technology adoption in the roasting phase of the coffee value chain in Colombian SMEs. To this end, a qualitative case study was conducted at the company “Del Campo Girardota” (Girardota, Antioquia), where a survey was administered to understand how technology adoption takes place, using as a specific example one of the most relevant pieces of machinery in the transformation process. The results show that technology adoption in this SME takes place at three specific moments. First, competitive intelligence, which allows for the identification of technological and procedural trends. Second, the prioritization and selection of technologies using a matrix that evaluates not only operational and financial capacity, but also technical aspects such as cost and time reduction, as well as related technologies. Third, proof of concept, once a specific technology has been selected for a pre-selected process. This procedure was validated through the roaster, corroborating the steps and decision criteria. The results broaden the discussion on productivity, competitiveness, and sustainability of SMEs in the sector.
