Descripción INTRODUCTION: Research is the scientific basis of the nursing discipline and profession. This component is an essential pillar in nursing careers' training and accreditation processes. Universities play a leading role in the development of research competencies in students and future professionals. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the scientific production of a nursing thesis at the undergraduate and graduate levels at the University of Panama. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A bibliometric, descriptive, and retrospective study of the theses registered from 2000-2023 was carried out. General and methodological data were extracted from the theses. They were tabulated and analyzed in Excel and descriptive statistics were used to calculate frequencies, graphs, and word clouds. RESULTS: A total of 107 theses were reviewed. A total of 61.8% were carried out in the hospital area on the topics of the health-disease process and patient care. The study population was mainly hospitalized patients (40.2%). The most used research approach was quantitative in 84.1%. Less than 20% reported the use of theories and those used were Callista Roy's Coping and Adaptation and Madeleine Leininger's Cultural Care: Diversity and Universality. CONCLUSIONS: At the University of Panama, the production of theses in undergraduate and graduate nursing is reduced, partly because there are other options to complete the studies. There is a need to promote the thesis option in education, incorporating the use of nursing theories.
Descripción INTRODUCCIÓN: La investigación es la base científica de la disciplina y la profesión de enfermería. Este componente es un pilar esencial en los procesos de formación y acreditación de la carrera de enfermería. Las universidades desempeñan un rol protagónico en el desarrollo de competencias investigativas en los estudiantes y futuros profesionales. OBJETIVO: Caracterizar la producción científica de enfermería tipo tesis en el nivel de formación de pregrado y postgrado en la Universidad de Panamá. MATERIAL Y MÉTODO: Se realizó un estudio de tipo bibliométrico, descriptivo y retrospectivo de las tesis registradas del 2000-2023. Se extrajo de las tesis los datos generales y metodológicos. Se tabularon y analizaron en Excel y se utilizó estadística descriptiva, para el cálculo de frecuencias, gráficos y nube de palabras. RESULTADOS: Se revisaron 107 tesis. El 61.8% fueron realizadas en el área hospitalaria en las temáticas del proceso salud-enfermedad y el cuidado del paciente. La población de estudio fueron principalmente pacientes hospitalizados (40.2%). El enfoque de investigación más utilizado fue cuantitativo en un 84.1%. Menos del 20% reportó el uso de teorías y las utilizadas fueron Afrontamiento y Adaptación de Callista Roy y Cuidado Cultural: Diversidad y Universalidad de Madeleine Leininger. CONCLUSIONES: En la Universidad de Panamá, la producción de tesis en enfermería en pregrado y postgrado es reducida, en parte porque existen otras opciones para culminar los estudios. Se sustenta la necesidad de promover la opción de tesis en la formación incorporando el uso de las teorías de enfermería.
